There is a natural alignment between risk appetite and leadership objectives - in most cases, they inform each other. It is no surprise, then, that risk leaders consider appetite an impactful tool for influencing major decisions.

Below are three case studies, detailing how risk appetite is being used at multinational organisations as a tool to support decision-making, shared by three members of our network.

Case study 1: Leveraging risk interconnectivity to deliver strategy

Where does this insight come from?

Around 70% of risk leaders in our network say that appetite is a priority for them. To address the common challenge and develop a practical approach to operationalising risk appetite, we interviewed a group of practitioners about how they are putting risk appetite into action.

Over 80% of the risk leaders we spoke to primarily use risk appetite as a leadership tool to guide strategic decision-making.

The full report from those interviews is available for all Risk Leadership Network members. Meanwhile, this article shares just three of the approaches for non-members and the wider risk community. Please book an exploratory call to find out more about membership and how to access peer insights on your biggest risk challenges.

Case study 2: Overcoming organisational silos

According to interviews with risk leaders in our network, embedding the head of risk as a permanent member of the investment committee is the most common method of operationalising risk appetite.

Case study 3: Justifying operational expenditure

More peer insights on risk appetite

These case studies are just some of the insights shared from our recent report on risk appetite, following a series of interviews with leading risk practitioners.

On the basis of these examples, risk appetite clearly has the potential to transform enterprise risk management into a strategic enabler that adds significant value to the business. And a number of members in our network are working on this right now.

The challenge, for all of them, is moving beyond well-written statements to operationalise the concept and make it meaningful. For prospective members, we'd be delighted to run through practical, peer-led approaches to operationalising risk appetite in more detail — please book an exploratory call with our insights team.
